We make them suffer.
We sometimes think of the sufferings of Jesus and Mary as if they suffer only for the sins of others, and not for our own sins. This is a serious error, since Jesus and Mary also suffer for our sins, big or small, serious or minor, since all sin is a more or less sharp thorn that sticks in the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, which if you can not suffer bodily, yes still suffering morally and spiritually.
